Thursday's rain stops at four, and the park is green and clean. Lin Hao and his mum walk in after they buy fruit. There are puddles on the path, and a little girl is drawing on a wet bench. Birds come back to the trees as if they were waiting for this.
Mum sits down and looks at her phone for a minute, then puts it away. "The air is better after the rain," she says. Lin Hao reads a page of his English book on another bench. A man walks a dog. Two old people do slow exercises.
A boy from Lin Hao's class waves. "I feel better here than on the busy street," the boy says. Lin Hao agrees. The city has museums, shops and tall buildings, but the park is where he can hear himself think.
They stay for fifteen minutes, then walk home before it gets dark. Mum says, "Tomorrow is Friday. One more school day." Lin Hao closes his book. Fresh air and a short walk make the evening homework feel lighter.
