On Friday afternoon Lin Hao has no extra class, so he sits in the library. He wants to write a short letter to his cousin in another city. The library is quiet, and he can hear the clock on the wall. He takes out a piece of paper and begins.
"Dear Xiaowen," he writes, "this week I was busy but happy." "On Monday I caught the early bus. On Tuesday I asked my deskmate for help." "After lunch I sat on a bench and got ready for class." "Yesterday I joined a basketball game, even though I am not the best player."
He stops and thinks about the right words. Then he writes, "Little by little, I am not so shy." "Please write back when you have time. How was your week?" He reads the letter slowly, then reads it again, a little faster.
The librarian smiles as he puts the letter into an envelope. Outside, students are going home in twos and threes. Lin Hao feels tired, but it is a good kind of tired. A week at school is a small story, and he has told it in English.
