On Friday evening Dad takes Lin Hao to the supermarket. The building is bright and cold inside, and there are too many choices. They need rice, milk, and vegetables for the weekend. Lin Hao pushes the trolley, which is heavier than it looks.
In the fruit area Dad asks, "Which apples look better?" Lin Hao picks a bag that is not too expensive. They also buy bread, because Saturday breakfast is always busy. A little child is crying for sweets, but his mother says no.
At the checkout the line is long. Lin Hao reads the English on a juice bottle while they wait. Dad pays, and they walk out into the warm night. The bags pull their arms down, but they laugh.
On the way home Lin Hao says, "Outside is full of small English." Prices, signs, and the words on bottles are all waiting. Dad answers, "Then keep your eyes open." This week they waited for a bus, bought water, crossed a street, sat in a park, and now they go home with rice and apples.
