Lin Hao opens the door with his key and calls, "I'm home!" He takes off his shoes and puts them on the rack, because Mum does not like a messy floor. The smell of soup comes from the kitchen, and the radio is playing a quiet song. Dad looks up from his newspaper. "How was school?" he asks.
Lin Hao thinks for a moment. The science question was hard, but Chen Yu helped him. He played basketball and missed a shot, but he still had fun. "It was good," he says. "Busy, but good."
Mum brings a plate of apple slices to the table. "Wash your hands first, then you can have some," she says. Lin Hao does as she says and sits down. He tells them about the letter in the library, and Dad nods.
Home is not only a place to eat and sleep. It is a place to talk about the day, even the small parts. After the apples, Lin Hao takes his bag to his desk. School is over, but the evening is just beginning.
